30 October 2016 Central Italy earthquake (Mw 6.5-6.6) - evidence of primary coseismic fracturing

2 November 2016

The field geology group of CRUST-UR Chieti survejed spectacular ruptures  along the Mt Vettore normal fault, associated to both the 24 August and the 30 October earthquakes of 2016. The vertical offset was up to 20 cm on 24 August and up to 2 meters on 30 August.

We stress that these structures represent the most important evidences of coseismic surface faulting, ever documented in Italy, during the “era” of the modern Earthquake Geology.
