S.I.S.M.A. "Seismotectonics and Seismic Hazard" Curriculum

The curriculum in Seismotectonics and Seismic Hazard is aimed at offering to Italian and Foreign master students a complete formative path in geology and seismology of earthquakes. Students will be introduced to the analysis of long-term and present tectonic processes controlling the genesis of earthquakes and to seismic hazard. Structural geology, regional tectonics, geophysics, active tectonics, earthquake geology, seismology, seismotectonics, seismic hazard, volcanology will represent the knowledge baggage for SSH students. The course will be organized in frontal lectures and laboratories. In-door laboratories are aimed to give to student practical skills in the use of advanced GIS systems, geostatistics, specific software for 3D surface building and modelling, for structural-geological data analysis, for seismological data analysis, seismic hazard modelling, etc.

Outdoor natural laboratories (e.g. field activities) will be performed in order to teach students to recognize, survey, represent and interpret different types and different scales of geological structures, with both traditional techniques and advanced digital techniques. One of the main curriculum intent is to form a new generation of Seismotectonists, e.g. multidisciplinary experts in structural geology and seismology with advanced basic and applied knowledges. A large number of job and carrier opportunities may be opened to SSH students, from research activity in doctoral context to employment in private industry and public administration, also in order to support civil protection activities. Students more interested to professional activity can acquire competences on detailed structural-geological-seismological analysis for applied purposes, local seismic hazard and seismic microzonation. Under request, training placements and multidisciplinary Master Thesis can be developed within the frame of CRUST (Centro InteRUniversitario per l’analisi SismoTettonica tridimensionale con applicazioni territoriali).
